luz polarizada a su paso por una sustancia \u00f3pticamente activa. El plano de vibraci\u00f3n de la luz es la direcci\u00f3n en la que vibran las ondas electromagn\u00e9ticas de la luz cuando viajan por el espacio. Esto significa que pueden influir en la direcci\u00f3n de la luz polarizada. Estas sustancias rotan la direcci\u00f3n de la luz polarizada en un \u00e1ngulo determinado.<\/p>\n<p>Las sustancias \u00f3pticamente activas requieren un centro de asimetr\u00eda, es decir, tienen un \u00e1tomo de carbono con cuatro sustituyentes diferentes. Tales mol\u00e9culas se denominan quirales. Se comportan entre s\u00ed como imagen y espejo y no pueden alinearse por rotaci\u00f3n. Nuestras manos son un ejemplo sencillo de ello.<\/p>\n<p>Si dos mol\u00e9culas difieren s\u00f3lo en la disposici\u00f3n de sus sustituyentes, se denominan enanti\u00f3meros. Su f\u00f3rmula molecular y la mayor\u00eda de sus propiedades f\u00edsicas, como el punto de fusi\u00f3n y el punto de ebullici\u00f3n, son id\u00e9nticas. Sin embargo, difieren en su actividad \u00f3ptica, ya que hacen girar la luz polarizada linealmente en la misma cantidad, pero en distintas direcciones (en el sentido de las agujas del reloj +; en el sentido contrario -). Tambi\u00e9n reaccionan de forma diferente en las reacciones qu\u00edmicas y tienen distintos modos de acci\u00f3n. Esto es especialmente importante en la industria farmac\u00e9utica. Si existe una mezcla 1:1 de un par de enanti\u00f3meros, \u00e9sta no es \u00f3pticamente activa.
