plan d&#8217;oscillation de la lumi\u00e8re polaris\u00e9e lorsqu&#8217;elle traverse une substance optiquement active. Le plan d&#8217;oscillation de la lumi\u00e8re est la direction dans laquelle les ondes \u00e9lectromagn\u00e9tiques de la lumi\u00e8re vibrent lorsqu&#8217;elles se d\u00e9placent dans l&#8217;espace. Cela signifie qu&#8217;elles peuvent influencer la direction de la lumi\u00e8re polaris\u00e9e. Ces substances font tourner la direction de la lumi\u00e8re polaris\u00e9e d&#8217;un certain angle.<\/p>\n<p>Les substances optiquement actives ont besoin d&#8217;un centre d&#8217;asym\u00e9trie, ce qui signifie qu&#8217;elles poss\u00e8dent un atome de carbone avec quatre substituants diff\u00e9rents. De telles mol\u00e9cules sont appel\u00e9es chirales. Elles se comportent l&#8217;une par rapport \u00e0 l&#8217;autre comme l&#8217;image et le reflet et ne peuvent pas \u00eatre align\u00e9es par rotation. Nos mains en sont un exemple simple.<\/p>\n<p>Si deux mol\u00e9cules ne se distinguent que par la disposition de leurs substituants, on parle d&#8217;\u00e9nantiom\u00e8res. Aussi bien leur formule brute que la plupart de leurs propri\u00e9t\u00e9s physiques, comme le point de fusion et le point d&#8217;\u00e9bullition, sont identiques. Ils se distinguent toutefois par leur activit\u00e9 optique, car ils font tourner la lumi\u00e8re polaris\u00e9e lin\u00e9airement de la m\u00eame quantit\u00e9, mais dans des directions diff\u00e9rentes (rotation \u00e0 droite + ; rotation \u00e0 gauche -). De m\u00eame, leurs r\u00e9actions lors de r\u00e9actions chimiques sont diff\u00e9rentes et ont des modes d&#8217;action diff\u00e9rents. Ceci est particuli\u00e8rement important dans le domaine pharmaceutique. Si un m\u00e9lange 1:1 d&#8217;une paire d&#8217;\u00e9nantiom\u00e8res est pr\u00e9sent, celui-ci n&#8217;est pas optiquement actif.
